Hybrid Rice in Africa: Challenges and Prospects
نویسندگان
چکیده
(eds M.C.S. Wopereis et al.) 173 Since the early 1990s, several other countries (Bangladesh, Egypt, India and Vietnam) have developed and introduced hybrid rice technology to their farmers. The availability of adequately trained human resources is an essential prerequisite for developing and using hybrid rice technology. Hybrid rice breeding uses several concepts, skills and procedures that are strikingly different from those used for ‘traditional’ inbred rice breeding (Virmani et al., 1997). During the first decade of the 2000s, several African countries (Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda) started to evaluate and cultivate rice hybrids from China. Only Egypt has succeeded in developing a hybrid rice breeding programme and produces Egyptian hybrids on a commercial scale. Grain yields obtained with hybrids have been in the order of 12–14 tonnes per hectare (Bastawisi et al., 2003). The programme developed a seed production system for the multiplication of cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines (A/B) and hybrid rice (A/R). Cropping practices and recommendations for CMS multiplication, hybrid seed production and hybrid rice cultivation were developed by the national programme. In addition, the programme features a special strategy to develop Introduction

Adoption Prospects and Challenges of Rice-Cum-Fish Farming Technology in the Low-Land Plains of Southern Nigeria
This study examined the adoption prospects and challenges of rice-cum-fish production technology among rice and fish farmers in selected States in southern Nigeria (Delta, Edo, Lagos and Ondo States). Using questionnaire, data was sought from 720 sampled rice and fish farmers in the selected States. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, logit regression. Results showed that more ...
متن کاملQuantitative studies for investigating variation and its effect on heterosis of rice
An important step in plant breeding programs is identification of parents that are geneticallydistant from each other, to find crossing combinations with better prospects of hybrid vigor. Thepotential of identifying genetically distant parents depends on genetic diversity of population. 58 linesof rice from diverse origins have been employed to study genetic variation in order to identify themo...
متن کاملReverse Electrodialysis for Salinity Gradient Power Generation: Challenges and Future Perspectives
Salinity gradient energy, which is also known as Blue energy, is a renewable energy form that can be extracted from the mixing of two solutions with different salinities. About 80% of the current global electricity demand could potentially be covered by this energy source. Among several energy extraction technologie...
متن کاملSmall Hydro-Power Plants in Kenya: A Review of Status, Challenges and Future Prospects
Small Hydro-power Plants (SHP) are an important source of electricity in many countries. However, little is known about SHP in Kenya. This paper reviews the status, challenges in implementation of SHP and prospects for future development of SHP in Kenya. The paper shows that SHP has not yet fully utilized the available hydro-power potential. The challenges associated with SHP development should...
